AUSTRALIAN industry has been slow to improve software development, according to the Australian Computer Society. Doug Jay, who chairs the ACS technical committee for software process improvement, said an award scheme introduced last year to recognise excellence in software development had failed to produce a winner.

"Despite all the talk about return on investment and how business goals are now driving software development, Australian industry is not doing enough in applying measurable, scientific principles to improve the way they do software," Jay said.

Scitec and Ericsson had received honorable mentions, but "there simply wasn't any organisation that really came up to our expectations in demonstrating the connection between its improvement and business goals."
